Machame Route Kilimanjaro – 6 Days Trek
The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route”, is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its excellent acclimatization profile, diverse landscapes, and challenging sections, this route is ideal for adventurous hikers with some trekking or backpacking experience.
Unlike the Marangu route, Machame is steeper and more demanding, but it offers incredible scenery through five unique climatic zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and the icy summit of Uhuru Peak. The trek approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest and descends via the Mweka Route, giving climbers breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.
Why Choose the Machame Route?

-
Stunning scenery through varied landscapes
-
Challenging yet rewarding trek with cultural and natural highlights
-
Good option to split the pre-summit climb for better rest
-
Popular and well-established trail with high summit success rates
