Climbing Mount Kenya is a dream for many adventurers and the Sirimon to Chogoria route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to reach Point Lenana, the mountain’s third highest peak. This 4 day itinerary takes you through lush forests, open moorlands, alpine valleys and finally to breathtaking views at the summit.
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from Nairobi at 7 am. After about three hours on the road you will arrive in Nanyuki town where you will have a short stop for last minute shopping and refreshments.
From there it is about an hour’s drive to Sirimon Gate where you will meet your cheerful team of guides porters and cooks. After lunch and registration the hike officially begins.
The trek to Old Moses Camp covers about 9 kilometers gradually introducing you to the mountain’s terrain. By evening you will enjoy a hot cup of tea dinner and your first night on Mount Kenya.
Overnight at Old Moses Camp
Time: 5 to 6 hours
Distance: 14 kilometers
Elevation Gain: 900 meters
After breakfast at 7 am the hike takes you through the Mackinders Valley a stunning alpine landscape dotted with unique flora. Along the way you will enjoy incredible views of the mountain’s jagged peaks.
Lunch will be served on the trail before you continue to Shiptons Camp where you will rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Overnight at Shiptons Camp
Time: 10 to 12 hours total
Distance: 17 kilometers
Elevation Gain: 785 meters
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. You will wake up at 2 am have a light breakfast and begin the final push to Point Lenana at 3 am. The climb is steep but worth every step especially when you arrive at the summit just in time for a breathtaking sunrise at 4985 meters.
After celebrating and taking photos at the top you will descend via the Chogoria Route to Mintos Hut for a hearty breakfast and some rest. The journey continues to Lake Ellis Campsite about 10 kilometers from Mintos where you will relax with evening tea and dinner.
Overnight at Lake Ellis Campsite
Time: 3 to 4 hours hike
Distance: 9 kilometers
After an early breakfast you will hike for about four hours down to Chogoria Gate. From here it is a 32 kilometer drive through scenic landscapes to Chogoria town where you will enjoy lunch and a cheerful farewell with your trekking crew.
Finally you will head back to Nairobi which takes about four hours arriving in the late afternoon tired but proud having conquered Mount Kenya.
